Description

The back of the photograph reads;
My Father, Allan Pinkerton, known as Major E.J. Allen during the Civil War, had discovered a plot to assassinate the President as he went from Harrisburg through Baltimore on his way to Washington and his first Inauguration.
My Father devised a plan, however, and traveled with Abraham Lincoln from Harrisburg through Baltimore to Washington in safety. President Lincoln made Allan Pinkerton the head of the Secret Service of the Army of the Potomac.
Just before the Battle of Antietam (September 14,1862), the President and his friend ,General John A. McClernand, went to the field to visit the troops. They also went to the Secret Service tent to call on my Father.
While there the official photographer, Alexander Gardner, made this picture.
