Lt. General Ambrose Powell Hill, Jr
.
If nothing else, A.P. Hill was one of the most interesting characters in a war filled with fascinating personalities. He was not a slaveholder; he believed the South's peculiar institution was wicked. He fought for Virginia and became "the hard-hitting embodiment of the Confederacy's military might.
An officer Lee called the best lieutenant general in his army.
A striking image of Hill, who was killed in the final days of the war (April  2, 1865, he was 39 yrs. old).
Note, seven days after his death, and the capture of General Ewell and his son General G.W. Custis Lee, losing his much needed supples that was supposed to be guarded by General Pickett at all costs, General Lee surrendered. He was running out of GOOD generals, soldiers, artillery, short on rations and now his eldest son was captured along with Lt. General Ewell and Richmond where his wife was, was now in flames.
Lt. General Ambrose Powell "A.P." Hill (CSA) is my 13th cousin twice removed.
