1861
Description:
Showing a group of seven African American men, former slaves, dressed in old Union uniforms standing in front of a wagon and shack. The negroes who ran away from slavery and came into Union lines were emplyed by the government as teamsters, laborers etc. They were happy, good natured fellows and made lots of fun for the soldiers. This is a characteristic group of "Contrabands" as they were called standing in front of their rough built shanty to have their picture taken.
