Here, a Mexican bride and her groom take part in
a ceremonial dance
celebrating
their wedding
. As we join the wedding, we see them as though we are looking from the unique position of standing
between the two figures
in the foreground. The four folks in this wedding scene are dressed in outfits and clothing
traditional to the
Tehuantepec
area.
Mr. Herman
was born in Massachusetts, but grew up in Los Angeles where he learned to speak Spanish and nurtured a great love and respect for his Mexican-American schoolmates and neighbors.
During World War II
, Mr. Herman was a field correspondent for "Stars and Stripes" and created the character
Winnie the WAC
for the U.S. Navy. He later created other figures including
Elsie the Cow and Reddy Kilowatt.
His illustrations were carried in virtually all of the national magazines of his day.
The artist was nationally and internationally-known as

The Norman Rockwell of Mexico
"
because he portrayed the Mexican people in their own culture, doing their normal day-to-day activities as well as at their special times, just as Mr. Rockwell did for the American people. Mr. Herman often gave his artwork

American Artist Magazine

", a name by which Mr. Herman also became known. His
artwork is today included in numerous public, private, and corporate Fine Art Collections.
