Gen., commanded 3rd Divn at Perryville, coastal defenses in the Gulf, command of the Dept of East Tennessee, commanded a Corps at Chickamauga, September 1864 Lt. Gen. in Trans-Mississippi as Kirby Smith's chief of staff. After the War he served as a newspaper editor, governor of
