"Woman Seated" Ink on Paper, Modern Art, Mexico, 1957Romeo Tabuena (Philippines/Mexico, 1921-2015)
"Woman Seated" is a character who reflects the humanistic side of Tabuena’s painting. The artist devoted much of his work to portraits of people he found taking time off in the street or in the market—peddlers, laundresses or peasants. He preferred working in the late afternoon and early evening, when traffic diminishes and gave the artist the respite he needed to make his sketches and drawings.

Romeo Villalva Tabuena (August 22, 1921—October 15, 2015) was a Filipino painter and graphic artista born in the city of Iloilo. He studied architecture at the Institute of Technology of Mapúa and painting at the University of the Philippines. He also studied at the Art Students League of New York and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Tabuena settled in Mexico, in particular in San Miguel de Allende, from 1955, which became the foundation of his career. But he maintained his ties with his native country by means of his participation in his principal art projects and, in spite of his long residence in Mexico, he kept his Filipino citizenship.
